How to Work ON Yourself FOR Yourself in 3 Simple Steps

Updated: Nov 3, 2020

Often, we get so caught up with life’s demanding responsibilities or by supporting others achieve their own goals that we end up neglecting ourselves in the process. What happens when we don’t tend to our own needs and wants? We eventually get depleted to the point where we are no longer able to fully function properly. That's why it is imperative to focus on ourselves by getting a bit selfish in order to recharge. The next time you’re feeling stressed out, try to follow these 3 steps moving forward.

1. Spend some "alone-time" to Get to Know Yourself Better. Ask yourself:

  • What makes me Happy?

  • What do I want less of in my life?

  • What is my life purpose and how am I working towards it?

Such questions may appear to be broad on the surface but can be quite insightful once you take a moment to answer them honestly. They will bring more clarity to what fulfils you as an individual and help you learn to prioritise yourself more.

2. Treat yourself with Kindness

Don’t be too hard on yourself when things don’t turn out the way you wanted them to. Beating yourself up with self-blame never helped anyone, especially not you. Be kind and patient with yourself. When you trip and fall, take a moment to recover and think about how you would approach matters differently the next time around. Most importantly, don’t allow those saboteur voices to tell you how badly you failed or how impossible it is to achieve that desired outcome you seek.

3. Write down a list of steps that will help you improve your life

  • You may want to start a journal or set some goals with a time line in mind.

  • Think of those things makes you unhappy and either change them or shed them completely from your life.

  • Start ticking off items on your bucket list. It could be that hobby that you’ve always wanted to take up but never got around to... or plan your next vacation even if it is only a staycation for now.

Just remember that it is up to YOU to work ON yourself FOR yourself. Nobody else is better equipped to do this. I will leave you with a powerful metaphor that I believe sums it all up. It's something that you’ve heard many times before from the cabin crew just as your flight is about to take off: “In case of a drop in cabin pressure, put on your oxygen mask first - before you proceed to help others around you.”
